The 10x wagering cap in detail
Before 2026 UK casinos commonly asked for 35x, 40x or even 50x wagering. A £10 bonus at 40x meant £400 of stakes, and at 96% RTP the house edge on that was £16 on average, more than the bonus itself. Most players never cleared it.
The cap changes the maths. A £10 bonus at 10x needs £100 of stakes, costing about £4 on average, so a player who doesn't run out of balance keeps roughly £6. The rule applies to all bonuses from licensed operators, not just welcome offers, and to free spins winnings as well as bonus cash.
The cap limits the multiplier, not the other terms. A casino can still set a max cash-out, a deadline, a max bet and a list of eligible games, so you still need to read them.
The mixed-product ban
Offers like "bet £10 on football, get 50 free spins" were a common way to move sports customers into the casino, where losses tend to be higher. Since 19 January 2026 they are banned. A casino offer must now be about casino games only, and a sports offer about sports only.
Identity checks and free play
Every UK-licensed casino must confirm your name, address and date of birth before you play anything, free spins included. Most checks happen automatically against credit reference data in seconds. If that fails, you will be asked for a photo ID and proof of address. Some casinos also ask you to add a debit card before releasing spins; it is not charged.
The check is there to keep under-18s out and to stop people opening accounts in someone else's name. It also means a no deposit bonus is never anonymous.
Fair and clear terms
The Gambling Commission requires significant terms, such as wagering, deadlines, max win and game restrictions, to be shown clearly next to the offer, not hidden behind several clicks. Unfair terms can also breach consumer law: after action by the Competition and Markets Authority, operators had to stop confiscating winnings on the basis of obscure rules. If you think a term was applied unfairly, complain to the casino first, then to its independent dispute resolution service (ADR), which must be named in the terms.
GamStop and bonuses
If you register with GamStop, every online casino licensed in Great Britain must block you for the period you chose (6 months, 1 year or 5 years) and stop sending you marketing, bonus offers included. The exclusion cannot be cancelled early.
Sites that advertise "no deposit bonus not on GamStop" are, by definition, not licensed in Great Britain. We do not list them, and we would recommend you stay away: they ignore the protections above, and you have no regulator to turn to if they don't pay.
Tax on winnings
UK players pay no tax on gambling winnings, from bonuses or otherwise. Operators pay Remote Gaming Duty on their gross gambling profits instead; the rate rose to 40% in April 2026, which is one reason some brands have trimmed their free offers.
